SUMMARY:Our Stories: First Friday Lecture Series - Michelle Myers - An Examination of Irregular Warfare During the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:A closer look at unconventional warfare tactics\, the West Virginia bushwhacker\, and how the geography and terrain of the Greenbrier Valley and beyond proved to be “the perfect storm for the huge volume of irregular or guerilla operations conducted throughout the war.”\n\nVolunteer Michelle Myers can usually be found in the museum archives helping to keep our archivist from drowning in paper. Born in England\, she has a degree in social anthropology and is a retired attorney. She says her special skill may be the ability to decipher incomprehensible handwriting.\n\nProgram will begin at 5 p.m.\, and last approximately 30-45 minutes. Light refreshments will be served afterward. Guests are welcome to bring their own. FREE and open to the public!

SUMMARY:Appalachian Ingenuity Series - Yarn Tassel Hangings with Shara Harel
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, June 27 from 12–2 p.m. at the North House Museum for “Yarn Tassel Hangings with Shara Harel\,” the first workshop in our new Appalachian Ingenuity Series.\n\n\n \n\n\nInspired by the Appalachian tradition of transforming simple\, readily available materials into something both beautiful and practical\, participants will create their own decorative yarn tassel hanging while exploring the creativity and resourcefulness that have long been part of life in our region.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe guided workshop will last approximately 90 minutes\, and attendees will be invited to participate in an optional hands-on activity as they arrive.\n\n\n \n\n\n✨ Free and open to the public\n\n\n✨ All materials provided\n\n\n✨ No experience necessary\n\n\n \n\n\nCome create\, learn\, and connect with others while celebrating a tradition rooted in Appalachian ingenuity.\n\n\n \n\n\n📍 North House Museum\n\n\n📅 Saturday\, June 27\n\n\n⏰ 12–2 p.m.\n\n\n \n\n\nThis workshop is also part of the Greenbrier Historical Society’s Garden Initiative\, a year-long program led by AmeriCorps Environmental Historian Jess Levine.\n\n\n \n\n\nRooted in experiential learning\, the initiative encourages people to discover the remarkable biodiversity of the Greenbrier Valley and Appalachian region and to celebrate it by incorporating native plants into their own landscapes. As part of this effort\, the gardens surrounding the North House Museum are being reimagined with native plantings\, including species that have historically served as medicinal and culinary herbs.\n\n\n \n\n\nCommunity participation is at the heart of the initiative. Through programs like the Appalachian Ingenuity Series\, we celebrate the Appalachian values of creativity\, resourcefulness\, self-sufficiency\, and shared knowledge while creating opportunities for hands-on learning and connection.\n\n\n \n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of creativity\, connection\, and hands-on learning as we celebrate the ingenuity and traditions that have shaped our region. We also invite you to stop by the North House Museum Tuesday through Saturday\, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, and discover the many programs\, exhibits\, and initiatives bringing local history to life.
