SUMMARY:Special Friday Lecture: Revolutionary War Medicine w/Dr. Peter Ward
DESCRIPTION:FREE! Everyone welcome.\nLocation: North House MuseumMuseum opens at 5 PM. Lecture will begin at 5:30 PM.\n\nThe American Revolution brought about changes in how colonists related with their government. It moved them from an understanding rooted in the medieval era to one based on the enlightenment era and re-evaluating traditions.\n\nAt the same time\, a similar process was occurring in how medicine was practiced in the soon-to-be United States. We will discuss how medical treatment shifted from an ancient and ineffective model to one that applied emerging scientific processes to heal the body.\n\nCome and enjoy a light-hearted (and occasionally gruesome) tour of medicine in the Revolutionary era and how it become the basis for modern healthcare.\n\nAbout Dr. Peter Ward:\n\nPeter J. Ward\, PhD\, completed a PhD program in anatomy education at Purdue University and\, in 2005\, he joined the faculty at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) in Lewisburg\, West Virginia. There he has taught gross anatomy\, neuroscience\, embryology\, histology\, and the history of medicine.\n\nDr. Ward has received numerous teaching awards\, including the WVSOM Golden Key Award and the Basmajian Award from the American Association of Anatomists\, and has been a three-time finalist in the West Virginia Merit Foundation’s Professor of the Year selection. Dr. Ward has served as Council Member and Association Secretary for the American Association of Clinical Anatomists.\n\nDr. Ward was a Consulting Editor for the 8th and 9th Editions of Netter Atlas of Human Anatomy; the Senior Associate Editor for the three volumes of The Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations: Digestive System\, Third Edition; a contributor to Gray’s Anatomy\, 43rd Edition; and is author of Netter’s Integrated Musculoskeletal System: Clinical Anatomy Explained.

SUMMARY:Appalachian Ingenuity Series: Paper Marbling with Toni Ogden
DESCRIPTION:Paper marbling is the centuries-old art of creating colorful\, swirling patterns by floating paints on the surface of water and carefully transferring those designs onto paper. Because every print is created by hand\, no two pieces are ever exactly alike\, making each work a one-of-a-kind expression of creativity. Join us in getting creative and leave with a piece of art as unique as you are. \nThis workshop is FREE and all materials will be provided. \nSaturday\, July 18 \n12 PM – 2 PM \nNorth House Museum \nWorkshop will last approximately 90 minutes. \n\nThis workshop is also part of the Greenbrier Historical Society’s Garden Initiative\, a year-long program led by AmeriCorps Environmental Historian Jess Levine.\n\n\nRooted in experiential learning\, the initiative encourages people to discover the remarkable biodiversity of the Greenbrier Valley and Appalachian region and to celebrate it by incorporating native plants into their own landscapes. As part of this effort\, the gardens surrounding the North House Museum are being reimagined with native plantings\, including species that have historically served as medicinal and culinary herbs.\n\n\n\n\nCommunity participation is at the heart of the initiative. Through programs like the Appalachian Ingenuity Series\, we celebrate the Appalachian values of creativity\, resourcefulness\, self-sufficiency\, and shared knowledge while creating opportunities for hands-on learning and connection.\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of creativity\, connection\, and hands-on learning as we celebrate the ingenuity and traditions that have shaped our region. We also invite you to stop by the North House Museum Tuesday through Saturday\, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, and discover the many programs\, exhibits\, and initiatives bringing local history to life.
